PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Maryland pounded out a season-high 18 hits including six in a nine-run third inning as the Terps took game one of the weekend series at Pittsburgh, 21-1, Friday afternoon at Charles L. Cost Field.

The Terps (31-19, 13-14 ACC) posted impressive offensive numbers. The 21 runs are the most by the team since matching that total against Duke on April 14, 2012, and the nine-run third marked the most runs in a single inning since scoring 10 against Hofstra on March 1, 2008.

Ten different Terrapin hitters tallied a hit and five Maryland hitters had multi-hit days including Jose Cuas, who turned in a career performance. Cuas tied a career high with four hits and set a career high with five RBI. He also added a double and a run scored.

The Terps tied a season high with eight doubles led by Anthony Papio with two. Papio tied his career high with four RBI and scored twice. Charlie White had three hits, three runs scored and two RBI, while Kevin Martir had two hits including a three-run home run.

“It was a good win,” said head coach John Szefc. “I told our guys to enjoy it for a couple of hours and then begin to focus on tomorrow. The important thing is that we come prepared tomorrow and win the series.”

The offensive explosion overshadowed another strong effort from starter Jake Stinnett. A week after throwing a 13 strikeout, complete-game shutout against Notre Dame, Stinnett scattered six hits over six innings allowing one run and striking out four.

Stinnett set up the Terps nine-run explosion in the third after holding Pittsburgh to one run despite loading the bases with one out. After allowing the run to score on a wild pitch, Stinnett fanned Caleb Parry and Manny Pazos to keep the deficit at one.

“It was nice to be able to pick up Jake today,” said Szefc. “He has pitched so well recently and in so many close games. It was nice to give him plenty of support.”

Maryland's nine-run third inning put the game well out of reach. All nine runs were scored with two outs beginning with a double by Cuas to score LaMonte Wade. After a Blake Schmit walk, Tim Lewis singled up the middle and then came home one batter later when Papio laced a two-RBI double down the right field line.

White picked up a RBI with a single through the right side to score Cieri. Two batters later with the bases loaded, Brandon Lowe brought a run home after he was hit by a pitch. Cuas then singled to center to plate two to bring the scoring in the third to a close.

After scoring a run in the fourth, the Terps put six on the board in the fifth. With two runs already across, Papio ripped a double off the wall in center for two RBI. Cieri then singled to right to score two more runs.

Back-to-back doubles by Martir and White to start the eighth plated a Maryland run and a single by Cuas scored another. In the ninth, Martir hit his second home run of the season, a three-run home run to put the Terps up by 20.

The Terps and Panthers are back at it Saturday at 3 p.m. from Charles L. Cost Field in game two of the weekend series.
