COLLEGE PARK, Md. – After being shut out in consecutive home matches for the first time since 2000, the Maryland men's soccer team picked up a penalty kick tally in the 31st minute en route to a 1-0 victory against Dayton Monday night.
Maryland (2-3-2, 0-1-1 Big Ten) mustered a season-high 16 shots and, despite only notching one goal, dominated the run of play from the opening whistle. Dayton (3-3-1), an NCAA tournament qualifier a year ago, managed only five shots and one corner kick on the night.
After George Campbell was brought down on the far side of the box, Mael Corboz nailed the ensuing penalty kick, beating Dayton keeper Chris Froschauer to his right for a 1-0 lead at 30:41 It was Maryland's first penalty kick attempt of the year and Corboz's first as a Terrapin.
Campbell, a freshman, led Maryland with four shots while a balanced Maryland offensive effort saw eight different players attempt at least one shot. Goalkeeper Zack Steffen picked up three saves in the shutout, Maryland's second in 2014.
“It's great to get a victory. I thought it was a very good team performance tonight. That was probably our most complete 90 minutes,” head coach Sasho Cirovski said. “I thought the guys came out with great energy and commitment and quality tonight. We certainly deserved more than the one goal we got. I was pleased. I thought it was a good response from the Michigan State game. Dayton is a very good team and they are going to be a handful for a lot of teams this year.”
Maryland returns to conference action on Friday when Wisconsin pays a visit to Ludwig Field for a 7:30 p.m. tilt.
