COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The No. 10 Maryland men's soccer team played to a 0-0 draw with intrastate rival No. 14 UMBC Friday night in front of 7,284 fans – the fourth-largest crowd in Ludwig Field history.
Maryland (1-1-1) outshot the Retrievers (2-0-1) 13-6 for the night, including two shots apiece from George Campbell, Emmanuel Korvah and Mael Corboz. Sophomore Zack Steffen earned the tie but due to a stout defensive performance, was not forced to make a save on the night.
After playing even soccer through 45 minutes, the Terps picked up eight opportunities in the second half, increasing the offensive pressure and forcing UMBC keeper Phil Breno to make three saves. Breno ended the night with six.
The Retrievers managed one shot early in the first overtime – the lone attempt for either team in extra periods.
“I thought again we were very good defensively,” head coach Sasho Cirovski said. “I knew in the beginning of the year we were going to have some questions on how we were going to build the attack and finish the attack and I think tonight we saw some questions. It's going to come. I believe in the guys we have.
“The crowd was outstanding tonight. We are averaging around 6,500 fans per game this season and the atmosphere here was fantastic once again.”
The Terps travel to its third consecutive 2013 NCAA tournament opponent when it heads to Navy for an 8 p.m. tilt against the Midshipmen Monday.
