COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Sophomore Alex Anthony consistently threatened the Michigan back line, but the Wolverines came away with a 1-0 victory over the Maryland women's soccer team at Ludwig Field Thursday night.
The Terrapins (5-7-0, 0-4-0 Big Ten) came on in the second half, but were unable to overcome Michigan's first half tally. Junior Lisa Bianchini and senior Maisie McCune put in solid shifts off the bench.
“I was disappointed with our approach,” head coach Jonathan Morgan said. “We made mental errors that we need to make sure to correct. The group came on a bit in the second half, but overall we need to be better and we'll learn from this.”
After a slow start to the contest, Anthony fired Maryland's first shot of the came after some nice work from senior Riley Barger. The senior laid off a first time flick to Anthony who missed wide with a right-footed effort from the top of the box in the 20th minute.
The sophomore was once again at the fulcrum of the attack in the 25th minute. Sophomore Madison Turner played a through ball into the right channel of the box to Anthony, who pulled her shot just wide across the face of goal.
In the 27th minute, senior Sarah Fichtner slid the ball to Anthony with the sophomore's back to goal in the box. The Littleton, Colo., native executed a nice turn, but saw her five-yard effort saved by Michigan goalkeeper Megan Hinz.
The Wolverines found the game winner in the 36th minute. Abby Kastroll found herself on the end of a Christina Ordonez cross and slid the ball Maryland senior goalkeeper Rachelle Beanlands for her fourth goal of the season.
Maryland found the game more in the second half, but were unable to find an equalizing goal. Anthony continued to trouble the Wolverine defense, combining well at times with Bianchini. McCune notched her only shot of the game with an ambitious right-footed volley from the top of the box that sailed high.
Bianchini had an opportunity close in the 78th minute, but her shot was blocked inside the box. Anthony fired from the top of the box minutes later, but couldn't find the goal.
Maryland's match with Michigan State scheduled for Sunday afternoon has been postponed. The Terps return to action next Thursday with a road contest against Penn State. Action will begin at 7 p.m.
