Buckeyes Slip Past Terps in Double OT

COLUMBUS, Ohio. – Sophomore forward Alex Anthony scored her team-high eighth goal, but the Maryland women's soccer team fell, 2-1, to Ohio State in double overtime Sunday afternoon.

The Terrapins (5-9-0) struck first on Anthony's second half tally, but went to overtime with the Buckeyes after a penalty kick. Nichelle Prince won it for Ohio State with a 12-yard effort in the second overtime period.

“Another gut wrenching loss for our team,” head coach Jonathan Morgan said. “The girls battled hard throughout but it wasn't enough today. We have tough kids and we're going to continue work hard to get over the hump. You earn your luck, it's not given. I know our team is going to get rewarded soon.”

After an even start to the match, Anthony found the Terps' first shot with a right-footed attempt from the left wing that skidded past the far post. Freshman Cassie Phillips fired wide in the 31st minute.

Anthony gave Maryland its best opportunity of the half with a turning shot in the box that just missed at the right post. Senior goalkeeper Rachelle Beanlands was also a standout in the opening frame, making four saves.

In the second half, Anthony played the ball up to herself and attempted an ambitious volley that sailed over the crossbar in the 52nd minute.

The sophomore put the Terps ahead in the 60th minute. After some possession in the back, senior Kayla Shea lofted a pinpoint pass that Anthony controlled brought down with her chest 25 yards away from goal. A turn and two touches later, Anthony unleashed a right-footed effort that nestled into the left corner of the goal.

Anthony was once against the center of the Terps' attack in the 73rd minute. After some nice hold up play from Lisa Bianchini, senior Riley Barger found Anthony down the left wing. The Littleton, Colo., native beat two defenders and took a left-footed shot that was saved.

Ohio State tied the game a couple minutes later when Nikki Walts finished a penalty kick to Beanlands' right. The Buckeyes kept up the pressure late in regulation, with Beanlands providing a couple of outstanding plays in her box. Anthony notched the final opportunity of the half with an 89th-minute effort that was saved.

The Terps' best opportunity of the first extra time period came after some fine work from Bianchini down the left side. The junior found Anthony's run in the box, but the sophomore was unable to finish from close range. Barger also notched a shot in overtime, but Prince won the game for the Buckeyes a couple minutes into the second overtime period.

Beanlands finished the contest with nine saves after her 11-save performance on Thursday night against Penn State. Shea's assist was her first of the season.

Maryland returns to action at Indiana on Thursday night at 7 p.m.
