Maryland Picked to Win Big Ten Title

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's basketball team was selected to win the Big Ten conference this year by both the league's 14 head coaches and the league's media panel. Juniors Brionna Jones and Shatori Walker-Kimbrough were voted to the Preseason All-Big Ten Teams by the coaches and media as well.

As the Terrapins were selected to win the league by both groups of voters, Ohio State was selected to finish second. The coaches voted Michigan State to finish third and the media voted Northwestern.

Both Jones and Walker-Kimbrough earned All-Big Ten Team honors last season. Walker- Kimbrough was named to the First Team by both the coaches and the media panel. She averaged 13.3 points per game and led all Big Ten guards in field goal percentage (.513).

Jones was named to the media panel's Second Team and the coaches' First Team. She picked up 14 doubles-doubles last season, while averaging 12.4 points and 8.9 rebounds per game.

Maryland went 18-0 in Big Ten play in its first year in the league last year. Head coach Brenda Frese was named Big Ten Coach of the Year for the second time in her career. The Terrapins beat Ohio State, 77-74, in the Big Ten Championship game to sweep the regular season and tournament titles.

Top-seeded Maryland went on to knock off undefeated Princeton in the NCAA Second Round. The Terrapins advanced to the Spokane Regional, where they beat Duke in the Sweet Sixteen, then second-seeded Tennessee in the Elite Eight to head to the Final Four in Tampa, Fla.
