COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The No. 18 Maryland men's soccer team played to a 0-0 draw against rival Indiana Friday in a rematch of last season's Big Ten Tournament title game at Ludwig Field.
The Terps (6-3-4, 2-1-3 B1G) racked up their seventh shutout of the year. Goalkeeper Cody Niedermeier registered four saves to lead Maryland defensively.
Maryland – which played in front of more than 4,000 fans at Ludwig Field for the fourth time this season – outshot Indiana (7-4-2, 1-3-1 B1G) 18-16 on the night, including a 3-2 advantage in extra time. Freshmen accounted for 12 of the Terps' attempts, including nine from starting forwards Eryk Williamson and Sebastian Elney.
Elney had Maryland's best opportunity of the evening in the 83rd minute. Tsubasa Endoh slotted a beautiful ball to the rookie, who then delivered a quick shot that sailed wide of the far post.
Freshman Jorge Calix provided the Terps with their top look in overtime. Calix fired a shot from 10 yards out that was fumbled and saved just a hair short of the goal line by Hoosier keeper Colin Webb in the 108th minute. The Terps outshot Indiana 3-1 in the final overtime period.
“I was really proud of how our guys played, even though we would have liked a better result, especially at home,” head coach Sasho Cirovski said. “I think what you saw tonight was a great game between two of the best teams not only in the Big Ten, but in the country. We had another tremendous crowd and I thought the atmosphere as a whole was just fantastic.”
The Terps are back in action on Tuesday when they welcome Delaware to College Park for a match at 7 p.m.
