COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Sophomore Alex Anthony tallied with a 20-yard blast in the 50th minute, but the Maryland women's soccer team fell, 2-1, to Purdue Sunday afternoon at Ludwig Field.
Anthony led the Terps with eight shots as the Terrapins peppered the Boilermaker goal with 14 total shots. Purdue won on a goal late in the second overtime period.
“I'm happy with how hard the girls played and how hard they worked,” head coach Jonathan Morgan said. “For the most part we did what we were supposed to, but we fell a little short. I thought we defended well and I liked our possession.”
The Terps controlled possession in the first half with solid play from Riley Barger, Sarah Molina and Maisie McCune in the midfield. McCune registered the Terps' first shot of the game with a long range effort that sailed over the crossbar.
In the 16th minute, senior Sarah Fichtner's good work on the right flank put Anthony in position in the box, but the sophomore's shot was blocked.
Anthony's strike came in the 50th minute. McCune headed an attempted Boilermaker clearance up the field before Anthony did the rest, ripping a 20-yard shot from the right channel to the far side netting.
Purdue answered in the 59th minute through Hannah Leinart. Junior Lisa Bianchini found Barger in the 71st minute, but the senior's shot went wide. In the 78th minute, freshman Cassie Phillips slipped a pass to Anthony who forced a fantastic save from Purdue keeper Jordan Ginther.
Bianchini benefitted from some great work from Anthony in the box, but was unable to get her effort inside the box past Ginther.
In the first overtime, Anthony started the Terps' barrage with a 25-yard effort that flied wide of the goal in the 92nd minute. Amanda Gerlitz started the move with a pass down the left channel to Barger who moved it to Anthony with her back to goal. The sophomore held the ball up and laid the ball in the path of Phillips who fired wide right off the side netting.
Anthony had an opportunity to win it late in the period. Phillips lofted a perfect pass over the top that Anthony was able to latch onto. After her initial attempt was blocked, Anthony's second goal bound shot was blocked away for a corner with 30 seconds left in the overtime.
Maryland's best opportunity of extra time came to the foot of Madison Turner. After a mistake by Ginther in the Purdue penalty area, Turner was afforded a clean look at goal but missed wide to the right with her 15-yard shot. Gabby Galanti put the ball in the back of the net in the 104th minute, but was whistled just offside.
Purdue found the winner in the 108th minute when Makaela Nellams made her spot kick after Leinert was taken down in the box.
Beanlands was solid throughout, making nine saves. Sophomore Kate Waters made her first career start in the defeat. Maryland dominated the corner kicks battle, registering a 9-1 advantage.
Maryland returns to action on Wednesday against Michigan State at Ludwig Field. Action is scheduled to begin a 4 p.m.
