Northwestern Tops #13 Terps in OT Friday

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The No. 13 Maryland men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision in overtime against Northwestern on a wet and windy Ludwig Field Friday afternoon.

The Terps (4-3-3, 1-1-2 B1G) outshot Northwestern a massive 24-4 for the match, including a decisive 9-0 advantage in the first half. Freshman Jorge Calix netted his first career goal for Maryland.

Friday's match – which was moved to a 2 p.m. start due to impending Hurricane Joaquin – saw Maryland control the vast majority of possession, especially in the first half where the Wildcats (4-4-1, 2-1-1 B1G) were held without a look on goal.

The Terps broke through in the 79th minute when Calix put Maryland on the board. After a shot from Tsubasa Endoh was saved by Northwestern keeper Zak Allen, Allen fumbled the ball, opening the door for Calix who was there to finish to the far post for his first collegiate tally.

Northwestern answered in the 83rd minute off a set piece. Sam Forsgren's free kick from 20 yards started the play and Jeffrey Hopson one-tapped the ball to a streaking Camden Buescher for the equalizer.

The Wildcats capped the scoring in the 99th minute when Joey Calistri pulled out Terrapin keeper Cody Niedermeier and he fed Getenet Tuji for the finish on the counter.

“We should never lose that game. We did everything right besides put the ball in the back of the net,” head coach Sasho Cirovski said. “Northwestern is a great team and they had a lot of blocks and had a committed defensive effort and we let them hang around. We've seen this story before and I don't like it but we responded well last year from this loss and that's our goal this year is to respond in a good way.”

Maryland welcomes Villanova Monday for a 7 p.m. match at Ludwig Field.
