LINCOLN, Neb. – The Maryland women's soccer team fell, 1-0, to Nebraska in its regular season finale Wednesday night.
Senior Riley Barger led the Terrapins with three shots. Nebraska scored its winner in the 81st minute.
Nebraska controlled the early portion of the contest before the Terps started to find the game. With 31 minutes to go in the half, redshirt junior Gabby Galanti founds the ball on the left flank and sent in a dangerous cross that was cut out by the Husker defense.
In the 39th minute, Barger found an opportunity but sent it high over the crossbar. Maryland back line played a nice half in front of Maryland goalkeeper Rachelle Beanlands. The senior keeper made a couple of nice stops in the first 45 minutes to keep take the Terps to halftime at 0-0.
Sophomore Madison Turner founds some space on the wing in the 48th minute, but her cross was cleared. Turner was once against at the center of the attack in the 57th minute when here right-footed effort from 18 yards forced a diving saves. A pair of Amanda Gerlitz corners were subsequently cleared away.
The Terps drew a free kick in a dangerous area just outside the box in the 70th minute. Gerlitz stepped up and sent a rocket just past the right post. Barger was on the end of another opportunity in the 78th minute, but her goal-bound attempt was partially deflected.
After a scramble in the box, Alli Peterson scored the winner for Nebraska from 15 yards out.
Barger had Maryland's best chance in the 89th minute. Sophomore Alex Anthony corralled the ball on the end line and laid it back to Barger, but the senior's shot was cleared off the line by the Nebraska defense.
Maryland held a 5-1 advantage in corners. The Terps finish their season with a 6-12-1 record.
