#6 Maryland Shines in First Exhibition

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The sixth-ranked Maryland women's basketball team cruised past Goldey-Beacom College, 127-33, Saturday in the Terrapins' first exhibition matchup of the season.

Freshman Kiah Gillespie led seven Terps in double figures with 22 points, 10 rebounds, three blocks and two assists. Sophomore Kiara Leslie added 18 points, Brene Moseley had 17, while Brionna Jones, Shatori Walker-Kimbrough, Kristen Confroy and freshman Brianna Fraser all hit double figures as well.

“Obviously, a nice exhibition game for us to put on the uniform, kind of get rid of those nerves,” head coach Brenda Frese said. “We were able to really lock in and get comfortable and confident. I liked the way we shared the basketball on the offensive end, I saw a lot of great things from us on both ends of the floor. Also some things we need to work on for when we play a Division I opponent. Good start for the first game."

Senior guards Chloe Pavlech and Brene Moseley each dished six assists without any turnovers. Maryland had just five turnovers as a squad.

The Terrapins led 9-5 just 2:20 into the game, then went on a 20-3 run over the final seven and a half minutes of the first quarter to push the lead to 29-8. Six Terrapins scored in the stretch.

Maryland's defense held the Lightning to just six buckets in the first half for a score of 54-17 at the break.

The Terrapins won the battle inside, outrebounding the Lightning, 59-19 and 58-8 in points in the paint. Maryland scored 40 points off Goldey-Beacom's 23 turnovers.

Senior Malina Howard's younger sister, Marisa, is a sophomore on Goldey-Beacom's squad.

The Terrapins will host Indiana University of Pennsylvania Wednesday at 7 p.m. in their final free exhibition match before the start of regular season. The Terps-Hawks exhibition matchup will be streamed through BTN2Go as well. Parking will be free and open after 4 p.m.

Maryland will officially open the season on Saturday, Nov. 14 vs. UMass-Lowell at 2 p.m. in College Park. Click here for the Terrapins' schedule.
