LINCOLN, Neb. - The Maryland volleyball team fell in straight sets to No. 9 Nebraska Saturday evening at Devaney Sports Center. The Terps (12-14, 2-10 B1G) fell by set scores of 9-25, 11-25, 12-15 to the Huskers (18-4, 9-3).
“Nebraska is a really good volleyball team,” head coach Steve Aird said. “I thought they played really well and have a lot of experienced kids. Tonight was a good lesson for the team, playing in front of 8,000 fans.”
Freshman outside hitter Liz Twilley led the Terps with seven kills while senior outside hitter Adreené Elliott notched five. Junior middle blocker Ashlyn MacGregor led the team with three blocks.
The Huskers dominated in set one, jumping out to a 7-3 lead. The Terps were unable to start any runs as Nebraska pushed ahead, 17-7. MacGregor and Twilley posted late kills but the Huskers were able to close the set on a 6-0 run, 25-9.
MacGregor and Elliott started the Terps off with a 2-1 lead in set two off a kill and a service ace. The Huskers posted five straight points before Angel Gaskin broke the streak with a kill. Nebraska worked out to a 15-7 lead at the media timeout. Hailey Murray slammed a ball to put the set at 22-11 before the Huskers rattled off three straight points to move into the intermission.
Elliott and MacGregor started the third set off with a block. Elliott and Twilley notched kills as the teams traded points Using a 4-0 run, the Huskers took a 9-4 lead. Murray posted a solo block, MacGregor tallied a kill and Elliott served another ace but Nebraska pulled ahead, 17-10. The Huskers put up eight of the next 10 points to close the match with a 25-12 set win.
The Terps return home for a four-match home stretch, starting with No. 3 Penn State Thursday at 8 p.m. The match is Maryland's Dig Pink event and will be played on the XFINITY Center main court.
