Incoming Terrapins Named to Naismith List

COLLEGE PARK, Md. –  Maryland women's basketball signees Kaila Charles (Glendale, Md.), Stephanie Jones (Havre de Grace, Md.) and Destiny Slocum (Meridian, Idaho) were three of 50 players named to the The Naismith Watch List for the Girls High School Player of the Year award.

Charles, Jones and Slocum make up half of the Terrapins' top-ranked class of 2016. Individually, Slocum is the highest-ranked, coming in at No. 7. Charles is ranked No. 25 and Jones, the younger sister of current Terrapin Brionna Jones, is ranked No. 51 by ESPN.

Charles averaged 22 points and 10 rebounds as a junior last season. She played her first years of high school at Eleanor Roosevelt High School, leading the Raiders to back-to-back Class AAA State titles.

Jones helped lead Aberdeen High School to the Class AAA State title in her freshman and junior seasons. As a junior last season, she averaged 19.5 points and 12 rebounds and has scored 1,451 points through three years.

Slocum earned Idaho Gatorade Player of the Year honors after averaging 25.1 points, 5.6 assists, 5.3 rebounds and 2.9 steals last season as a junior. She helped lead Mountain View High School to its first state title. Slocum also helped lead Team USA to a gold medal in Moscow in the FIBA World Championships this past summer.

Sarah Myers (Cumming, Ga.), Jenna Staiti (Cumming, Ga.) and Blair Watson (Nutley, N.J.) also signed on to play for the Terrapins next year.

Next, the sixth-ranked Terrapins (3-0) will head to the U.S. Virgin Islands for the Paradise Jam in St. Thomas this week. They will play Old Dominion (1-2) Thursday at 5:45 p.m. ET, South Dakota State (2-0) Friday at 5:45 p.m. ET and Pittsburgh (3-0) Saturday at 8 p.m. ET.

All three games will be streamed live online for free through ParadiseJam.com and live stats will be available as well.
