NEW YORK – Senior Thea LaFond's school record in the 60m hurdles (8.39 seconds) highlighted the Maryland track and field team's solid performance at the Armory Invitational Meet this weekend.
LaFond's school record came in the semifinals of the hurdles and she returned to finish seventh in the finals. The senior also notched a third-place finish in the high jump (5'10.75”) and a fifth-place finish in the triple jump.
Also in the high jump, senior Amber Melville continued her strong season, winning the event with a mark of 6-0. Izzy Laurel notched a sixth-place finish with a jump of 5-9.75, the eight best mark in Maryland history, and Peyton Wade captured 11th-place with a jump of 5-8, which moved her to 10th on Maryland's all-time list.
Myah Hicks ran 2:10.85 in the 800m to finish 10th in a strong field. In the 500m, Shade Pratt was the Terps' top finisher with a time of 1:15.14. The women's 4x400m relay team of Pratt, Lisa Meneau, Micha Powell and Rachelle Alexander placed ninth in a time of 3:47.10
Catherine Sheffo recorded a personal best performance (17:46.67) in the 5k. She is now 10th on Maryland's all-time list. In the shot put, junior Chioma Onyekwere finished fourth in the shot put with a throw of 49-8.50 on her sixth and final attempt.
Maryland also boasted some solid performances on the men's side. Brandon Thompson made the finals of the 200m and placed seventh. Freshman Diego Lyon notched a time of 8.27 in the 60 hurdles which placed him 10th all-time in Maryland's all-time list. Alex Leto's time of 49.47 in the 400m dash moved him to ninth on Maryland's all-time lsit.
The Terps return to action at the Husker Invitational in Lincoln, Neb., on Friday Feb. 6.
