COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 1 Maryland women's lacrosse team begins its NCAA Championship defense on the road at William & Mary Sunday at 2 p.m.

  • The Terrapins won the 2014 NCAA Championship and ACC Championship while tying a program record with 23 wins.
  • Maryland is 32-9 all-time in season openers.

  • Freshman attacker Megan Whittle was named the No. 1 incoming freshman by Inside Lacrosse.
  • The list also includes freshmen Terps Taylor Hensh at No. 9 and Kacie Longo at No. 13.
  • Maryland's freshman class boasts five Under Armour All-Americans: Whittle, Hensh, Longo, Steffani Holmes and Shelby Scanlin. The class ranks second overall nationally.

  • Maryland won its NCAA-best 11th national championship in 2014, defeating Syracuse, 15-12, in the championship game.
  • In 2014, the Terrapins posted a 23-1 record, tied for the best in program history. Maryland won its sixth consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference championship.
  • Head coach Cathy Reese earned IWLCA National Coach of the Year and Regional Coach of the Year honors, in addition to being named a league-high seventh ACC Coach of the Year.
  • Sophomore Taylor Cummings took home the Tewaaraton Trophy, IWLCA National Midfielder of the Year and Inside Lacrosse Midfielder of the Year while Megan Douty was named a Tewaaraton finalist and named IWLCA National Defender of the Year and IWLCA Co-Defender of the Year.
  • The Terps won the AIAW national championship in 1981, before the NCAA sponsored the sport, bringing the program's national championship total up to 12.

  • After leading the Terps to their 12th national championship, junior midfielder Taylor Cummings earned the 2014 Tewaaraton Trophy. Megan Douty joined Cummings as a finalist for the honor.
  • As just a sophomore, Cummings is the youngest-ever female recipient of the Tewaaraton.
  • Since the award was founded in 2001, Terps have taken home the Tewaaraton five times. Cummings joins Jen Adams (2001), Caitlyn McFadden (2010) and Katie Schwarzmann (2012, 13) as Terrapins who have earned the nation's top collegiate individual honors.
