Dominant Pitching Leads Terps In Double Header Sweep

BOCA RATON, Fla.—Maryland's pitching staff tossed two shutouts, as the Terps (5-2, 0-0 B1G) swept the first day of competition at the FAU 'Strike Out Cancer' tournament. The team defeated Providence 4-0 in the morning game and Drexel 6-0 in the afternoon game.

Senior Kaitlyn Schmeiser and sophomore Hannah Dewey dominated, pitching a combined 14 innings, 12 strikeouts, three hits and zero earned runs over the course of the day. The duo yielded one hit against Providence and two hits against Drexel.

Kaitlyn Schmeiser struck out a total of 11 batters today to bring her career total up to 303. She moves ahead of Sarah Dooley for sole position of eighth all-time strikeout leader in program history.

The Terrapin bats came alive as well, spanning 19 hits in two games. Maryland racked up 12 hits in the morning outing and seven in the afternoon.

The Terrapins return to the diamond tomorrow for another double header as they face #24 Tulsa at 9:00 a.m., and Drexel at 1:30 p.m. Live Stats for tomorrow's games can be found HERE.

First Game

Scoreless through three and a half, Friday's first game was shaping up to be a pitchers dual, but an RBI single to left from Juli Strange drove in Kylie Datil to break the scoreless tie. Lindsey Schmeiser then added a RBI single to bring in Strange, making it 2-0 Terps heading into the fourth.

Maryland added an additional run in the bottom of the fifth when a RBI single from Erin Pronobis brought Corey Schwartz home from second. Hannah Dewey added an insurance run with a solo shot to make it 4-0.

From the mound, Hannah Dewey (2-1) had a no-hitter through five and finished a stellar performance after five and a third innings pitched. She got the win after giving up one hit and striking out one. Kaitlyn Schmeiser came in for the save, pitching a clean inning and two-thirds and striking out one.

Maryland's bats remained hot as Corey Schwartz went 2-for-4, Lindsey Schmeiser went 2-for-4 with one RBI, and Hannah Dewey went 2-for-4 with one RBI. Erin Pronobis also added a 2-for-3, one RBI day from the plate.

Second Game

The second game of the double header started like the first, a pitchers dual through three. With the bases loaded in the top of the fourth, Bridget Hawvermale ripped a RBI single to bring Corey Schwartz home. On the next batter, Juli Strange's bat remained hot, as she drove in Shannon Bustillos on an RBI single to make the game 2-0.

The Terps added four runs in the top of the seventh to extend their lead to 6-0. A Drexel error scored Hawvermale and moved Strange to third. Lindsey Schmeiser's RBI sacrifice fly brought in Strange. Another Drexel error scored Schwartz and Calta.

Kaitlyn Schmeiser (3-1) picked up her third win of the season, hurling a complete game, two-hit, one strikeout performance.

Bridget Hawvermale went 2-for-3 with one RBI, Corey Schwartz went 2-for-4, and Lindsey Schmeiser went 1-for-3 with one RBI.
