BOCA RATON, Fla.—The Maryland softball team capped off its weekend with a 6-5 walk off loss against Florida Atlantic. The Terps (6-4, 0-0 B1G) finished their five-game stint at the FAU 'Strike Out Cancer' tournament 3-2 with wins against Providence and Drexel.
"I liked how our bats came around today," head coach Courtney Scott Deifel said. "We are continuing to change our approach and I like the direction we are heading.The team has come so far and we just have to keep fighting."
The Terps bats came alive today scoring 5 runs off 7 hits.
Maryland got out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first after an RBI single brought Lindsey Schmeiser home and moved Juli Strange to third. A sacrifice fly from Mandy Gardner would bring the second run home from third.
The Owls struck back with three runs in the bottom of the third taking a 3-2 lead off one hit and two errors in the inning.
The Terrapins would tie it back up in the top of the fourth off an Erin Pronobis solo shot to right center. Shannon Bustillos would get herself into scoring position after a single and a stolen base, but would not advance after a pop up and ground out would end the inning.
Maryland tacked on two additional runs in the top of the sixth off one hit and three Owl errors. Kaitlyn Schmeiser and Bridget Hawvermale crossed the plate for the Terps in the inning.
FAU added two runs to tie the game at five in the bottom of the sixth off two hits and one error. The Owls would then score the go-ahead run off a throwing error in the bottom of the seventh.
Hannah Dewey started the game from the mound pitching three innings giving up three runs on two hits. Kaitlyn Schmeiser came in in relief, pitching three and a third innings giving up three runs on four hits, and striking out four.
Hannah Dewey went 2-for-4 front the plate, as Erin Pronobis went 1-for-2 with a home run and an RBI.
Maryland returns to the diamond on Thursday (Feb. 19) for a five-game stint at the Mary Nutter Classic in Palm Springs, Calif. The team will face Notre Dame at 6:00 p.m. and BYU at 9:00 p.m. on Thursday. They will then take on Nevada at 11:30 p.m. on Friday and finish the weekend on Saturday against UNLV at 3:00 p.m. and Long Beach State at 11:00 p.m. All game times currently listed are EST.
