Terps Take Two In Final Day At Mary Nutter Classic

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif.—The Maryland softball team swept the final day of competition in the Mary Nutter Classic, defeating UNLV, 5-2, and Long Beach State, 10-7. The team received contributions throughout the line-up, combining for 15 runs off 18 hits over the two games. With the sweep, Maryland moves to 10-5 on the season and 4-1 in Mary Nutter Classic competition.

Sophomore Sarah Lang started the first two games of her career, going 4-for-7 with a double and a RBI to help lead her team to victory.

On the weekend, Hannah Dewey continued her tear from the batter's box, hitting .467 with seven hits and four RBIs. Mandy Gardner drove in 11 runs and tallied three extra-base hits.

Kaitlyn Schmeiser posted a 3-1 record over the weekend, and appeared in all five games the Terps played. Schmeiser had a 3.69 ERA in 24 and 2/3 innings, while fanning 25 batters.

Game One

Maryland would strike in the first inning as Lindsey Schmeiser walked and Hannah Dewey got hit by a pitch. With two on, Mandy Gardner would pop a sac fly to score Schmeiser and give Maryland the early 1-0 lead.

In the second, Erin Pronobis would hit her second long ball of the year to dead right, extending the lead to 2-0.

Sarah Lang knocked a single to right for her second hit of the afternoon, and her first career RBI to put the Terrapins up 3-0 in the fourth. A Lindsey Schmeiser RBI sac fly and a fifth inning Hannah Dewey RBI single would give Maryland a 5-0 cushion.

UNLV's Emily Haslinger hit a two-run shot in the sixth.

Kaitlyn Schmesier got the win going six innings and striking out four. Hannah Dewey would pick up the save, pitching a solid seventh. Erin Pronobis went 2-for-2 with one RBI and one home run from the plate.

Game Two

Maryland had the bats going early, as Lindsey Schmeiser and Erin Pronobis singled, and Corey Schwartz got hit by a pitch to load the bases for Juli Strange. Strange would draw walk to put Maryland in the scorebook. Maryland's RBI leader Mandy Gardner came through next with a double to the right field fence to take a 3-0 lead.

The 49ers would cut the Maryland lead to one with two runs off three hits in the first two innings.

Lindsey Schmeiser put Maryland's fourth run across in the third, driving in Mandy Gardner. Two home runs from Corey Schwartz and Mandy Gardner, both their team-leading third of the season, as well as a RBI single from Juli Strange, gave the Terps a 7-2 lead through four.

Corey Schwartz' fielder's choice scored an addional run in the fifth.

With two on in the sixth, Shannon Bustillos hit a RBI single up the middle. A Hannah Dewey walk brought in a Terrapin runner, to give Maryland the 10-3 lead.

Long Beach State would score four runs in the final two frames, but Maryland would hold on for the 10-7 victory.

Hannah Dewey got the win pitching four innings, while Kaitlyn Schmeiser took the mound in relief, getting the save, and striking out six. For the season, Schmeiser has struck out 74 batters.

Eight of the nine Terrapin batters got at least one hit as Mandy Gardner went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and Corey Schwartz went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

The Terrapins will travel to Orlando, Fla. next weekend for the ESPN Citrus Classic. Maryland will take on four NCAA Tournament teams from 2014 in Fordham, Mississippi State, James Madison, and Missouri.
