NEW YORK – The No. 1 Maryland women's lacrosse team is represented by Taylor Cummings, Megan Douty, Brooke Griffin, Kelly McPartland and Alice Mercer on the 2015 Tewaaraton Watch List, as announced by the Tewaaraton Foundation Thursday night.
Each Terp on the list was named a preseason First Team All-American by Inside Lacrosse. Cummings, Douty, Griffin and McPartland were all named 2014 First Team All-Americans, while Mercer was named to the third team.
Cummings is the defending Tewaaraton Award winner, becoming the youngest-ever female recipient of the trophy in 2014. The midfielder was also the IWLCA National Midfielder of the Year, Honda Award winner and NCAA Championship MVP after posting 128 draw controls and 63 goals to lead the Terps.
Douty was a Tewaaraton finalist in 2014. The senior was named the IWLCA Defender of the Year in 2014 after registering 36 ground balls and 19 caused turnovers.
Griffin recorded 62 goals and 24 assists last season. She was named the ACC Championship MVP and earned All-ACC Second Team honors. Griffin was named to the Tewaaraton Watch List in 2014.
McPartland recorded 94 points last season, tied for 10th all-time in Maryland history, on 61 goals and a team-high 33 assists. She was named First Team All-ACC, and to the conference championship and NCAA Tournament teams. McPartland was named to the watch list last season.
Mercer has become one of Maryland's top defenders, starting all 24 games in 2014. The junior earned 29 ground balls and 21 caused turnovers last season.
Maryland has won four of the last five Tewaaraton Awards. Caitlyn McFadden captured the honor in 2010, while Katie Schwarzmann became the Terrapins' first two-time winner in 2012 and 2013.
The Tewaaraton Award annually honors the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States. The selection committees are made up of premier collegiate coaches and are appointed annually by The Tewaaraton Foundation.
Players not named to the initial list have several opportunities to play their way into a spot as the season progresses. Watch lists additions, if applicable, will be announced on March 19 and April 9. On April 23, the field will be narrowed to 25 men's and 25 women's nominees. Nominees can be players on the watch lists or players not on the watch lists, effectively allowing for a third round of additions. Five men's and five women's finalists will be announced on May 7 and invited to the ceremony. The Tewaaraton Award Ceremony will be held in Washington, D.C., on May 28, 2015, at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian.
