COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The No. 54 Maryland women's tennis team increased its winning streak to four consecutive matches with a 5-2 victory over Penn at the Tennis Center at College Park Sunday afternoon.
After winning the doubles point, the Terps fell behind in the first set in four singles matches but came back and rallied. Maryland finished with a trio of three-set wins.
“I'm very proud of the team. We had a slow start to singles. Penn came in fighting and took the first set on four courts,” head coach Daria Panova said. “However, we persevered and found a way to turn it around. It was a great team effort.”
The Terps started off the match strong in doubles. Freshman Ekaterina Tour and Sophomore Kristina Hovsepyan defeated Kana Daniel and Ria Vaidya, 6-3, to gain the advantage. Olga and Nataliya Bredikhina won the point for the Terps with a 6-2 win over Alexandra Ion and Lina Qostal.
Penn won points in the higher spots in singles. In the No.2 spot, Sonya Latycheva defeated Ekaterina Tour, 6-3, 6-4. While Kana Daniel won over Nataliya Bredikhina, 1-6, 6-2, 6-1, in the No.3 spot.
Welma Luus gave the Terps some life and claimed victory over Ria Vaidya, 7-5, 6-1. Alexandra Stanova defeated Aqustina Sol Eskenazi, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. Olga Bredikhina, and Olivia Gaudreault contributed to the effort with wins over Lina Qostal, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, and Luba Vazhenina, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Maryland returns to action next Friday at home against Old Dominion. Action is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
