COLLEGE PARK, MD. – The No. 43 Maryland women's tennis team extended its winning streak to six matches and remained undefeated in the Big Ten by stamping out No. 61 Nebraska, 7-0, Friday afternoon at the Vine Street Courts.
The Terps started off the day strong and gained the early lead with wins in the No. 1 and No. 3 spot. The Bredikhina twins clinched a victory over Huskers duo Mackenna Maddox and Katerina Matysova, 8-2. Welma Luus and Alexandra Stanova secured the doubles point for the Terps with an 8-5 win over Izabella Zgierska and Mary Hanna.
"We did not have our best tennis today, but it was one of our best fights," said head coach Daria Panova." The girs took what they had and made it work, I'm very proud of them."
In singles play, the Terps continued to play hard and swept the Huskers. The Bredikhina sisters continued to win in singles play with Olga defeating Matysova, 6-3, 7-5, and Nataliya winning over Hanna, 6-4, 7-6 (13). In the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, Stanova defeated Maggy Lehmicke in a pair of 6-2 sets while Ekaterina Tour edged out Zgierska, 6-0, 6-2.
In the No. 6 spot, Kristina Hovsepyan won a hard battle over Maddox, 4-6, 7-6 (5), 1-0 (12). To round out the Terps singles sweep, Luus continued her singles winning streak and defeated Lisa Andersson, 6-4, 6-0.
The Terps return to the Tennis Center in College Park on Sunday to face No. 13 Michigan at noon.
