COLLEGE PARK, Md.—The Maryland softball team plated 23 total runs and allowed only one run in a double header sweep of Lafayette on Sunday. In its first home series of the season, Maryland beat Lafayette 9-1 in five innings in the first game and 14-0 in five innings in the nightcap.
With the two victories, Maryland moves to 16-9 on the season and 2-0 at home.
Lindsey Schmeiser hit the cover off the ball, going 5-for-6 and 5 RBIs over the course of the two games. She added two home-runs and hit .833.
The Terps are back in action tomorrow as the welcome Princeton (3-6) to the Maryland Softball Stadium at 11:00 a.m.. The game will be played as part of the UMD/GW Capital Invite.
Game One
The Terps got out to a quick start as L. Schmeiser, the first Maryland batter of the game, sent a long ball to deep center to give Maryland an early 1-0 lead, as the Terrapins tallied at least a run in all five innings.
Lafayette walked in a run as Erin Pronobis hit a sac fly to center to score Kylie Datil in the bottom of the second, making it 2-0 Maryland.
The Maryland bats came alive in the third as Shannon Bustillos singled and Juli Strange walked, both scoring after a Lafayette error on a L. Schmeiser drive to center. The ensuing batters, Hannah Dewey and Corey Schwartz, would walk and get hit by a pitch, respectively, loading the bases for Erin Pronobis. A RBI single up the middle from the senior scored Dewey and L. Schmeiser, making it 7-0.
Two consecutive errors in addition to a pass ball would give the Leopards back an unearned run in the fourth, but Maryland shut the door scoring an additional two runs off a RBI single from L. Schmeiser and a sacrifice fly by Mandy Gardner in the bottom of the inning.
Kaitlyn Schmeiser picked up the win, yielding only two hits and striking out eight in a complete-game effort. K. Schmeiser held the Leopards hit-less into the fifth inning.
Game Two
The Terps picked up where they left off in the nightcap of the double header, jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. L. Schmeiser scored off a Pronobis single.
Maryland's offense would awaken in the third, tallying 12 runs off 12 hits. Eight straight batters tallied hits, as Maryland racked seven extra-base hits in the frame as well.
Datil led the third off with a triple to center. L. Schmeiser then doubled to right scoring Datil. Corey Schwartz drove L. Schmeiser in off an RBI double to right. Schwartz and Pronobis would score after a RBI single from Mandy Gardner, adding to her team-leading 27 RBIs on the season. K. Schmeiser and Emma Mires would reach base, only to score off a Strange single and Datil double. L. Schmeiser launched her second homer of the day, a two-run blast to extend the Terps lead. Schwartz added a two-run home run of her own, adding to herr team-leading sixth of the season. After a Lafayette pitching change, Maryland added another run, making it 13-0 in favor of the Terps.
The team picked up one last run in the fourth off a Sarah Calta RBI single. Nine Terrapins accounted for 14 hits as seven had at least one RBI in the game.
Brenna Nation (1-0) got the nod on the mound, picking up the victory for the Terps in her first start of the season. She allowed two hits, no runs and struck out four in a complete-game effort.
