COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Mandy Gardner's single up the middle drove in two runs, completing the come from behind walk-off victory over Princeton, Tuesday afternoon. The Maryland softball team tallied two runs in the bottom of the final frame to defeat the Tigers, 6-5. With the victory, Maryland moves to 17-9 on the season and 3-0 at the Maryland Softball Stadium.
The Terrapins have won three straight, and swept its competition in the UMD/GW Capital Invite.
“This team is never fazed,” head coach Courtney Scott Deifel said after the game, “We have a lot of confidence and we know that we have a chance no matter what.”
Princeton jumped out to an early 3-0 lead off a Haley Hineman double that cleared the bases. The Terrapins would get one back in the bottom of the first, after Lindsey Schmeiser led off with a solo home run, her third in as many games.
In the Maryland fourth, Gardner hit an RBI single that scored Erin Pronobis from third, making it 3-2 in favor of Princeton.
Princeton added two more in the fifth as Kylee Pierce and Alyssa Schmidt scored unearned runs off two Terps errors and a walk. Maryland countered with two runs of its own in the bottom of the fifth. Following a Hannah Dewey walk, Corey Schwartz mailed a two-run home run to left, her team-leading seventh of the season, pulling the Terps within one.
Both the Terps and the Tigers would go quietly in the sixth as Maryland headed into the final frame down a run.
Dewey, Schwartz and Pronobis all reached to load the bases with one out. After a fielder's choice racked the second out, Gardner hit a two-RBI single that scored Dewey and Schwartz, ultimately winning the game.
On the day, Gardner hit 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Brenna Nation (2-0) got the win for the Terps, pitching a perfect sixth inning. Kaitlyn Schmeiser started the game from the mound as Dewey also saw pitching action.
Maryland returns to the diamond tomorrow, for a double header against St. Francis at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. at the Maryland Softball Stadium.
