Four Named to All-Big Ten Teams, Frese Honored

ROSEMONT, Ill.  – Four members of the Big Ten champion Maryland women's basketball team earned All-Big Ten First and Second Team honors Monday and head coach Brenda Frese was voted Big Ten Coach of the Year for the second time in her career.

As voted on by the conference's media panel, sophomores Lexie Brown and Shatori Walker-Kimbrough were named to the All-Big Ten First Team, while redshirt senior Laurin Mincy and sophomore Brionna Jones were named to the Second Team. The league's head coaches named Brown, Walker-Kimbrough and Jones to the First Team and Mincy to the Second Team.

Brown was also voted to the five-member All-Big Ten Defensive Team.

After losing five seniors, including three starters and a three-time All-American, Maryland led the league in scoring with 80.9 points per game, en route to a perfect 18-0 conference record and a 21-game win streak over the last three months. The Terrapins are the first team to go undefeated in conference play since Purdue went 16-0 in 1998-99 and Ohio State went 18-0 in 1984-85. This is first Maryland team, men's or women's, to stay perfect in conference play.

“Congratulations to Brenda and her staff in leading the Terps to an undefeated conference record in our inaugural campaign in the Big Ten,” director of athletics Kevin Anderson said. “Brenda is very deserving of this honor and the tremendous success she has had this season is a testament to her outstanding leadership. I also want to congratulate our four Terps – Lexie, Shatori, Brionna and Laurin – for receiving All-Big Ten honors and appreciate their commitment and dedication to our program.”

Frese has been named conference Coach of the Year four times, twice in the Big Ten, after earning it the honor in her one season at Minnesota (2001-02). She is one of just two coaches in the country to earn the recognition in three leagues – the MAC (2000), Big Ten (2002, 2015), ACC (2013) and to be named National Coach of the Year.

In just her sophomore campaign, Brown served as floor general as the league's best offense and a top-five offense nationally. She led the Terrapins in assists and steals on the year. Brown averaged 12.9 points per game and 13.8 in conference play, as well as 4.8 assists overall and 5.6 in Big Ten games. Brown also had an assist/turnover ratio of 2.2 in league play and averaged 2.3 steals on the year. Brown was named to the All-ACC Freshman team last season.

Walker-Kimbrough led the Terrapins in scoring with 13.9 points per game this season. She averaged 14.9 points a contest over the Terps' 18 conference games. Walker-Kimbrough shot 54.2 percent from the field (161-of-297) on the year to lead all Big Ten guards in field goal percentage.

Jones improved the most of all the Terrapins, nearly doubling her scoring and rebounding numbers from a year ago. This season, she averaged 12.6 points and 9.0 rebounds, which are both more than her totals from her freshman season of 6.9 points and 4.5 rebounds. Jones is third in the league and is fourth in the NCAA with her field goal percentage of 59.4 percent (148-of-249).

This is the second All-Conference honor for Mincy, who earned the All-ACC Honorable Mention honor as a sophomore in 2012. She averaged 13.5 points per game overall this season and led the Big Ten with her free throw percentage of 86.1 percent (118-of-137). She is second in the Maryland record books in free throw percentage, behind only Kristi Toliver. Mincy also averaged 4.1 boards and 3.3 assists per game on the year.

The Terrapins are 62-29 (.681) all-time against their 2014-15 Big Ten opponents. Maryland has won 27 straight games against Big Ten teams, dating back to 2007. In the 13 years under Frese, the Terps are 30-4 (.882) against their new conference opponents. Frese is 42-10 (.808) all-time vs. Big Ten opponents, which includes her time at Minnesota (2001-02) and at Ball State (1999-01).

Maryland will be the No. 1 seed at the 2015 Big Ten Women's Basketball Tournament, which will be held March 4-8 at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Ill.

The Terrapins will make their Big Ten Tournament debut on Friday, March 6 at 12:30 p.m. ET against either the 8-seed Michigan (16-13, 8-10) or 9-seed Michigan State (15-14, 7-11) in a nationally-televised game on the Big Ten Network.  Click here for the Big Ten Tournament Bracket and more information.
