IOWA CITY, Iowa— Senior Shannon Bustillos went 2-for-3 from the plate with two home runs, as the Maryland softball team dropped the middle game of a three-game series against Iowa, 8-4. With the falter on Saturday, the Terrapins move to 18-12 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
The Hawkeyes jumped out to an early lead, racking three runs in the home first. Sammi Gyerman doubled to left field, driving in Cheyenne Pratt off a throwing error. Iowa picked up two additional runs off a Megan Blank and Holly Hoffman RBI singles.
Iowa added another run in the fourth as Allie Wood rocked a solo-shot to left, extending the lead to 4-0.
The Terps cut Iowa's lead in half tallying two runs in the sixth inning. Bustillos mailed her first long ball of the evening to right, while Hannah Dewey hit an RBI single that drove in Kylie Datil.
Iowa quelled the Terps come back added another three runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Hawkeyes picked up three runs on four hits to pull ahead 8-4.
The deficit proved to be too much, as the Terps could not complete the comeback.
Brenna Nation (2-2) took the loss in the circle, pitching two innings and giving up three runs. Dewey, Kaitlyn Schmeiser and Jaymi Bautista-Geiger also saw time on the mound.
