COLLEGE PARK, Md.—Corey Schwartz mailed a two-run home run to left center as the Maryland softball team completed the come from behind victory over Ohio State on Friday. The Terps overcame a 10-run deficit, scoring four in the final frame to win 11-10.
With the victory, Maryland moves to 21-13 on the season, and 3-1 in the Big Ten.
The Buckeyes struck first, plating three runs in the top of the second, one run in the top of the third, and one run in the fourth to take a 5-0.
In the Maryland fourth Shannon Bustillos led the inning off with a triple, her first of the season. The ensuing batter, Kaitlyn Schmeiser, pushed Bustillos across with a RBI single. Kylie Datil added a second run in the inning, hitting a sacrifice fly to score Emma Mires.
Ohio State answered with five runs off four hits in the fifth inning to open up a 10-2 lead.
The Terrapins started its comeback in the bottom of the fifth, when Bustillos drew a bases-loaded walk to bring Hannah Dewey home.
In the sixth inning, the team tacked an additional four runs to cut the Buckeye lead to 10-7. After three straight walks, Erin Pronobis doubled in two runs, scoring Dewey and L. Schmeiser. K. Schmeiser followed it up with a two-out double of her own, driving in Schwartz and Pronobis.
Heading into the final frame, the Terps retired the Buckeyes in order. Juli Strange led the offense off with a walk. Datil's pop-fly moved the runner to second with one out. L. Schmeiser doubled to bring Strange home, while Dewey doubled to bring L. Schmeiser across the plate. With one on, one out and down a run, Schwartz blasted a two-run home run to dead center, her team-leading 11th of the season, to give the walk-off victory to the Terrapins.
K. Schmeiser (15-5) picked up the victory from the circle. Brenna Nation and Jaymi Bautista-Geiger also saw time from the mound.
Lindsey Schmeiser went 2-for-4 with three RBIs from the plate, extending her hit streak to 11 games.
The Terps are back in action against Ohio State at the Maryland Softball Stadium on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
