HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Maryland softball team played a pair of games in Harrison, Va., Sunday, defeating Stony Brook in the first game, 2-1, before falling to James Madison, 10-5.
Shannon Bustillos, Erin Pronobis and K. Schmeiser were named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Terps are scheduled to play their first games at the Maryland Softball Stadium this weekend, as they host Lafayette (Mar. 14 – 11 am/1:15 pm) and Princeton (Mar. 15 – 12:15 pm) as part of the UMD/GW Capital Invite.
Game One
Senior pitcher Kaitlyn Schmeiser struck out seven and allowed just one run in a complete game effort as the Maryland softball team held on for a dramatic 2-1 victory over Stony Brook in the first game Sunday afternoon.
K. Schmeiser was dominant in the circle throughout the game, but had some timely help in the field in the seventh inning as Hannah Dewey fired a laser from center field to tag out the would-be game tying run at home. Dewey's perfect throw ended the game and secured the victory for Maryland.
The Terps jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning with a two-out rally that began with a Corey Schwartz single. Pronobis then followed by crushing a double to left center that scored Schwartz.
Maryland doubled its lead, 2-0, in the second frame as Bustillos got things going with a single up the middle. After Bustillos advanced to second on a Kylie Datil fielders' choice, Lindsey Schmeiser loaded the bases with a single of her own. Seawolves pitcher Jane Sallen then walked Hannah Dewey, allowing Bustillos the free pass to home.
Stony Brook posted its lone run of the game in the bottom of the third when Kim Ragazzo tagged a home run to center field.
K. Schmeiser rolled through the rest of the game until the aforementioned seventh inning when Lauren Kamachi attempted to tie the game and was tagged out at home.
Bustillos led Maryland with two hits and a run scored, while Pronobis and Dewey each notched an RBI.
Game Two
L. Schmeiser and Dewey combined for four RBIs as the Terps fell to James Madison, 10-5, in the second game of the day Sunday.
The Dukes took an early 4-0 lead on four singles and a double to grab a commanding hold on the game in the first inning.
Maryland senior Mandy Gardner fired back by launching a homer to left center in the second inning, but James Madison's Alyssa Buddle responded with a three-run homer to give the Dukes a 7-1 lead.
After a scoreless fourth, the Terrapin bats connected for a four-run fifth inning to pull within two runs, 7-5. The rally began with back-to-back singles Juli Strange and Sarah Calta, setting the table for a two-run double by L. Schmeiser. Dewey then followed with a two-run round-tripper to left center.
The comeback was quickly quelled, however, as the Dukes scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to claim a 10-5 advantage and the eventual victory.
