COLUMBUS, Ohio – Three Terrapins scored hat tricks as the No.1 Maryland women's lacrosse team (14-0, 3-0 B1G) defeated No. 14 Ohio State (10-5, 1-2), 13-8, Sunday afternoon.
Taylor Cummings, Megan Whittle and Brooke Griffin each scored three goals. Zoe Stukenberg, Kelly McPartland, Erin Collins and Kristen Lamon each notched one goal.
Cummings found the back of the net with a shot from just inside the 12-meter arc at 25:08. Stukenberg fed a pass to Griffin, who scored just 23 seconds later. Whittle picked up her own rebound and put in an easy shot in front of the crease at 22:54 as the Terps took a 3-0 lead.
The Buckeyes were able to score at 19:06, but Griffin found Lamon with a backdoor pass at 18:27. Griffin scored again at 17:12 as she rolled around the crease and found the net, and she completed a hat trick at 15:32 off a pass from Cummings.
Whittle tallied her second goal of the game at 14:16 on a free-position shot. Cummings dodged and scored at 13:30 as Maryland increased its lead to 8-1. Ohio State was able to score at 11:39, but the teams remained scoreless for the rest of the half.
The Buckeyes scored first in the second half at 21:50. Collins was able to get the Terps on the board in the half with a bouncing shot at 19:57. Katie Chase scored for Ohio State at 17:54, but McPartland was able to find the back of the net at 17:13 as the Terps took a 10-4 lead.
Ohio State scored two consecutive goals before Cummings was able to wrist in a free-position shot at 5:48. Chase scored her fourth of the game at the five-minute mark. Whittle finished her hat trick at 2:34 off an assist from Stukenberg.
Stukenberg scored at 1:17 on a free-position shot, and Kelsea Ayers was able to tally a goal with one second remaining, but the Terps took the 13-8 victory.
Goalkeeper Alex Fitzpatrick made seven saves and picked up three ground balls and a caused turnover in the win.
Maryland held a 30-20 shot advantage and a 15-6 advantage in the draw circle.
The Terps take a short trip to No. 20 Johns Hopkins Wednesday. Opening draw is scheduled for 8:30 p.m., and the game will be broadcast on ESPNU.
