COLLEGE PARK, Md.—Behind a stellar six-inning performance from Hannah Dewey, the Maryland softball team defeated Penn State on Sunday, 5-3. The victory completes the series sweep for the Terps (26-19, 8-7 Big Ten) and marks the team's first-ever Big Ten sweep.
“I can't say enough about Hannah [Dewey] today. Right from the beginning she worked her zone and pitched a really great game for us,” Head coach Courtney Scott Deifel said after the game. “I am so proud of [Dewey] today and very pleased with our team's effort this weekend.”
A pitcher's duel through two and a half innings, Maryland broke through offensively in the third, jumping out to a 3-0 lead. A dropped fly ball by a Penn State outfielder to lead off put Juli Strange on second. The junior advanced to third off a Lindsey Schmeiser grounder to the pitcher. The ensuing batter, Dewey, walked, bringing Corey Schwartz to the plate. Schwartz doubled down the right field line to cash in two runs. A single to center by Erin Pronobis drove in the third run of the inning.
Maryland then took a commanding 5-0 lead, tallying two additional runs in the fourth. Two consecutive doubles by Strange and Kylie Datil crossed a run, while a L. Schmeiser single, drove Datil home. L. Schmeiser's single marks her twenty-second consecutive game with a hit.
In the top of the fifth the Lions loaded the bases, but the Terps navigated the jam, allowing no runs.
Penn State did break the shutout in the sixth, as Lexi Knief hit a two-RBI double to center. PSU added an addition unearned run to cut the Terps lead to 5-3.
Kaitlyn Schmeiser shut the door in the seventh, pitching a perfect frame and striking out one. The Dunkirk, Md. native picked up the save (5), while Dewey got the win (6-8). In addition, Dewey went 2-for-2 from the plate and scored once.
Maryland hits the road on Tuesday, for a mid-week double-header at Rutgers. The games are scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. and will be broadcast on BTN2Go.
