Four Terps Named Tewaaraton Nominees

WASHINGTON, D.C. – An NCAA-best four members of the No. 1 Maryland women's lacrosse team were named to the 25-member Tewaaraton Award nominee list, as announced by the foundation Thursday.

Taylor Cummings, Megan Douty, Brooke Griffin and Megan Whittle were all named Tewaaraton nominees. The four Terps have led Maryland to a 16-0 record in 2015.

Cummings, the defending Tewaaraton winner, leads the Terps in assists (28), points (77), ground balls (33), draw controls (111) and caused turnovers (26). The junior midfielder is ranked second nationally in points and fourth in the NCAA in points per game. Cummings is also fifth nationally in draw controls. The Ellicott City, Md., native became the youngest female recipient of the Tewaaraton last season.

Douty leads the Terrapin defense that has allowed just 6.88 goals per game, the seventh-ranked scoring defense in the country. The senior defender has 23 ground balls and 17 caused turnovers on the season. Douty was a Tewaaraton finalist in 2014.

Griffin leads the Maryland offense and has 35 goals and 17 assists on the season. The redshirt senior attacker is the leader of the eighth-ranked scoring offense as the Terps are averaging 14.50 goals per game.

Whittle immediately entered Maryland's starting lineup on attack. She leads the team and is fourth in the country with 55 goals.

Maryland has won four of the last five Tewaaraton Awards. Caitlyn McFadden captured the honor in 2010, while Katie Schwarzmann became the Terrapins' first two-time winner in 2012 and 2013.

Five men's and five women's finalists will be selected from these groups of 25, announced on Thursday, May 7, and invited to the ceremony. The 15th annual Tewaaraton Award Ceremony will be held Thursday, May 28 in Washington, D.C., at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian.
