COLLEGE PARK, Md.—Juli Strange reached base twice, going one-for-one with a walk as No. 4 Michigan dropped the Maryland softball team, 8-0 on Friday. The game marked the second game of the Terps (26-22, 8-10 Big Ten) season to be broadcast nationally on the Big Ten Network.
The two teams held each other scoreless in the first, as Hannah Dewey pitched a one, two, three first inning. In the bottom of the first frame, Maryland put runners on first and second with one out, but could not convert.
Michigan put two runs on the board in the second after a two-RBI single down the left field line by Tera Blanco put the Wolverines out in front.
The visitors added two more runs in the bottom of the third, walking in a run and plating another off an Aidan Falk infield single.
Michigan extended its lead with an unearned run in the fourth and three runs in the fifth. An illegal pitch moved two runners into scoring position. One scored off a Wolverine sacrifice hit, while Blanco put two more on the board with a two-run home run to left center.
Hannah Dewey (6-11) took the loss, tossing two and a third innings, while striking out one. Kaitlyn Schmeiser and Brenna Nation also saw time from the pitcher's circle.
Maryland returns to the diamond on Saturday for the middle game of the series. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Maryland Softball Stadium.
