Terps Split Doubleheader with Indiana Saturday

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Maryland softball team's high-powered offense continued its roll on Saturday, scoring fourteen runs and blasting six home runs as the Terrapins split a doubleheader with Indiana. The Terps (22-16, 4-4 Big Ten) won the first game 6-3, before falling in the second 11-8.

Maryland will be back on the diamond tomorrow for the rubber game at 1 p.m.

GAME ONE:

Bustillos went 3-of-4 with a home run and drove in four runs as Maryland led from start to finish in a 6-3 victory.

Lindsey Schmeiser started off the game with a double to right center, extending her hit streak to 14 games. Bustillos' first hit of the day drove in Schmeiser and Corey Schwartz to give Maryland an early 2-0 lead.

Bustillos also produced Maryland's third run of the game as she brought home Pronobis. Senior Bridget Hawvermale then lined an RBI single to center, bringing home Bustillos to give the Terps a 4-0 lead.

Maryland would tack on runs in the fourth and the fifth. Bustillos nabbed her third hit in as many at bats, and her fourth RBI with a homer to right. Schwartz slashed an RBI triple to center to produce the sixth run.

Indiana picked up one run in the fourth and two in the fifth, but Maryland would held on for a 6-3 victory.

Kaitlyn Schmeiser threw a complete game from the circle, picking up her 16th win of the season. Schmeiser allowed just two earned runs and struck out eight.

GAME TWO:

Pronobis had a career game, going 4-for-4 with three solo home runs, but it wasn't enough, as Maryland fell to Indiana in a slugfest, 11-8.

Maryland once again jumped out to an early 4-0 lead as doubles by Hannah Dewey and Bustillos, a single from Pronobis and a sac fly by Kaitlyn Schmeiser put a three spot up for Maryland in the first. Lindsey Schmeiser blasted the first of Maryland's five home runs in the second to give the Terrapins a 4-0 lead.

Indiana grabbed three runs back in the second, but Pronobis responded with a home run in the third to make the Maryland lead 5-3.

The Hoosiers scored six runs in the sixth innings, highlighted by a grand slam to lead 9-5 through four innings.

Maryland battled back three more solo home runs. Two came from Pronobis and Dewey added one of her own, but it wouldn't be enough as Maryland dropped the second game, 11-8.

Brenna Nation got the start and went three innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out three. Kaitlyn Schmeiser was lights out in the fifth and sixth, retiring five of the six batters she faced.
