EAST LANSING, Mich.—Shannon Bustillos blasted a solo home run in the top of the fourth inning, breaking the all-time Maryland home run record, as the Maryland softball team fell to Michigan State, 4-3. The long ball represented her tenth of the season and 28th of her career. In addition, the RBI recorded off the home run ties the senior for first on the all-time Maryland RBI list with Lindsay Klein ('04-'07) with 148.
Michigan State struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Lea Foerster scored after Stephanie Sanders hit a sacrifice fly to center field. The Spartans added two more runs in the third as Kassidy Kujawa and McKenzie Long both picked up RBI singles.
The Terrapins rallied in the fourth, scoring three runs to knot the game up. Bustillos led the inning off with a home run, as Kaitlyn Schmeiser doubled down the left field line. The ensuing batter, Juli Strange, doubled to left field brining the pinch runner, Skylynne Ellazar, home. Lindsey Schmeiser drove the third run home off a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Strange.
Foerster opened the fifth for MSU with a triple to right center. Kujawa popped a sacrifice fly to center field, driving in the winning run as the Spartans took the lead for good.
Overall the Terps (26-25, 8-13 Big Ten) picked up three runs off seven hits. K. Schmeiser went 2-for-3 from the plate and also started the game from the circle. The senior took the loss (18-10) pitching a complete game four hit affair, while fanning seven.
The two teams meet for the middle game of the series on Saturday at 1 p.m.
