#10 Terps Notch Fifth Shutout, Draw at MSU

EAST LANSING, Mich.  – The No. 10 Maryland men's soccer team picked up its third consecutive shutout with a 0-0 draw at Michigan State in Big Ten Conference action on Friday night at DeMartin Stadium.

Maryland (3-1-3, 0-0-2 B1G) now boasts five shutouts in seven outings in 2015, holding opponents to a stingy 0.57 goals per game. Cody Niedermeier notched his fourth clean sheet of the year. The junior boasted six saves on the night and has allowed just one goal in his first season at starting keeper for the Terps.

The first half was dead-even with both teams attempting six shots apiece, but it was Niedermeier who starred for Maryland. Of MSU's (3-2-1, 0-0-1 B1G) six attempts, Niedermeier saved three. The Terps' best chance of the first stanza was a 38-yard free kick by Mael Corboz which was saved just shy of the cross bar.

Maryland's next shot on goal wouldn't come until the end of the first overtime but it was arguably the closest-call of the night for either team. Chris Odoi-Atsem beat a Spartan defender on the sideline and utilized his speed to create a solid scoring chance for the Terps in the 97th minute. His serve to Tsubasa Endoh was spot on, but the senior midfielder's ensuing header was saved at the goal line by Zach Carroll to push the game into a second overtime.

The Terps outshot Michigan State, 4-1, in the final overtime period including a Jorge Calix shot that went just wide with five minutes remaining.

“We competed hard against a good team and to tie on the road in the Big Ten is nothing to be ashamed of,” head coach Sasho Cirovski said. “I thought defensively we were very solid. The entire back line was outstanding again today. Cody's leadership and positioning was solid. To have five shutouts in the first seven games is a good sign because I think our attack will continue to get better as the season progresses.”

The Terps return to action when they travel to the nation's capital to face Georgetown on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
