BALTIMORE - Tsubasa Endoh and Ivan Magalhaes were selected in the first and second round of the Major League Soccer SuperDraft Thursday.
The Terps' big day in Baltimore marked the 12th straight season Maryland boasted at least one selection in the MLS SuperDraft and the fifth straight year the Terps had at least one player taken in the first round.
Endoh - a four-year standout midfielder for Maryland – was picked up with the ninth overall selection by Toronto FC, becoming the Terps' highest pick since Casey Townsend was taken fifth overall in 2012. Endoh – who was named the most valuable player of the 2016 MLS Combine - garnered second team All-Big Ten honors as a senior this season. The Tokyo, Japan, native recorded five goals and six assists and was vital to Maryland's late season success, including landing Big Ten Tournament Most Valuable Offensive Player honors while leading Maryland to its fourth straight league tourney crown.
“I couldn't be happier for Tsubasa in fulfilling his dream of playing professional soccer," head coach Sasho Cirovski said. "Tsubasa was not only one of our top players on the field, he led us in the classroom as well and earned his degree in sociology in December. Tsubasa embraced every single challenge thrown his way since arrival to College Park from Tokyo four years ago and I have all the confidence in the world that he will continue the strong legacy of Maryland Soccer in the MLS.”
Magalhaes - who ultimately had one year of eligibility with the Terrapins – was taken with the 26th overall pick by the Houston Dynamo. Magalhaes started in all 22 games he appeared in, helping Maryland notch 10 shutouts on the year. The center back from Sao Paulo, Brazil also posted a goal and an assist for Maryland.
“It was an absolute pleasure to have Ivan as part of our program this season and he was integral to our success, especially defensively," Cirovski said. "He really grew as a player here at Maryland in just a short time and I believe he has a very promising future at the next level.”
Two-time First Team All-Big Ten selection Mael Corboz signed a Homegrown contract with New York Red Bulls. Corboz started in all 23 games as a senior this season, racking up 12 assists and a pair of goals. He scored a league-high 10 goals as a junior in 2014 and was named Big Ten Tournament Most Valuable Offensive Player.
