BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Maryland picked up three match victories at No. 20 Indiana Friday evening, but a trio of overtime wins for the Hoosiers made the difference as the hosts secured a 26-13 decision. Redshirt seniors Lou Mascola (157) and Geoffrey Alexander (133) both notched wins, while freshman Jaron Smith (184) continued his impressive rookie campaign with a pin in the night's final bout. The Terps drop to 4-7 (1-4 Big Ten) while Indiana improves to 5-1 (2-1 Big Ten).
Smith saved the best for last for the Terps in their first-ever trip to University Gymnasium, sealing his third consecutive conference victory over IU's Wyatt Wilson. The Columbia, Md. native had the upper hand early, jumping out to a 4-0 lead before using a reversal in the third period to gain control of Wilson's shoulders. Smith slowly but surely moved the Hoosier into position, and put both scapulas to the mat at 6:01.
Indiana managed to take advantage of opportunities late in matches throughout the evening, starting with a 5-3 sudden victory for Jake Masengale over Garrett Wesneski (197). Two more wins had the Hoosiers ahead 12-0 through the first three weights, before No. 13-ranked Alexander answered back with a 9-0 major decision over Alonzo Shepherd.
IU got its second extra-time victory at 149, as Luke Blanton earned a 9-4 tiebreaker decision over freshman Wade Hodges (149). Hodges was in control into the third period with a 4-1 lead, but Blanton battled back using a stall call and reversal to force the overtime periods. He tacked on points in both 30-second periods to notch the win and put his side ahead 18-4.
No. 19 Mascola found himself behind 6-3 heading into the third period, but never waivered using some savy wrestling to earn a close 8-7 decision over Jake Danishek. After an escape cut it to 4-6, Mascola got a takedown then released Danishek to go for the win only behind 6-7. Mascola put him away in the final seconds, getting a takedown then holding the Hoosier to cut the deficit to 7-18.
Freshman Brendan Burnham (165) fought hard against Bryce Martin, and maintained a 5-3 lead into the third period. Once again, the Indiana wrestler found a way to force overtime on a takedown, then got another for a 7-5 sudden victory.
Maryland wrestling will have select attached and unattached wrestlers in action tomorrow at the Shorty Hitchcock Open hosted by Millersville University. The Terps return to dual meet action on Sunday, January 17 when the squad faces Purdue in West Lafayette, Ind.
