WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Redshirt sophomores Tyler Goodwin (133) and Dawson Peck (285) both earned victories by decision, but it was not enough as the Terps fell 32-6 at Purdue Sunday afternoon. After splitting the two opening weights, the hosts fired off seven straight match victories to secure the win. The Boilermakers, who checked in at No. 20 in the latest USA Today/NWCA Coaches Poll, improve to 7-2 and 2-1 in the Big Ten. Maryland slides to 4-8 (1-5 Big Ten).
Goodwin won his fourth consecutive match and second straight Big Ten victory with an 11-7 decision over Cody Pae in the 133-pound bout. The Gambrills, Md. native was on top of his game early, getting a takedown and four-point near fall to jump out to a 6-0 lead in the first. Pae made it a match with a pair of reversals to cut the lead to 6-4, but Goodwin answered back with a reversal of his own to stay up 8-4. He took care of business in the third, using a late takedown to seal the eventual four-point victory.
Peck got back in the win column in his first match since Midlands on December 30, earning a decision over Tyler Kral. He trailed 2-1 after the first, but got a three-point swing in the second period on a quick escape and takedown combination. Kral managed a takedown in the third to tie things up at four, but Peck reversed him and held on for the eventual 8-4 win.
Purdue's middle of the lineup proved too much for the Terps in the program's first trip to Holloway Gymnasium as a member of the Big Ten. The Boilermakers notched five bonus point victories on the day, including pin from Drake Stein (197) and match-clinching a technical fall for Jacob Morrissey (174).
Maryland wrestling will return to competition on Friday, January 22 when the team makes the short trip to Annapolis, Md. to face the U.S. Naval Academy.
