COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland women's soccer team put forth a strong effort, but ultimately fell, 3-0, against Penn State Sunday afternoon at Ludwig Field.

The Terrapins (3-11-1, 1-6-0 Big Ten) defended well in the run of play, but were undone by three Penn State goals off corner kicks. Sophomore Jarena Harmon's shot off the post late in the second half was Maryland's best chance of the match.

“I think we did a really good job,” head coach Ray Leone said. “To keep a team like Penn State at bay at all is a challenge, and I think we measured up very well.”

The Terps almost opened the scoring in the second minute. Junior Chelsea Jackson played a through ball toward Madison Turner in the box, but the junior was unable to get a shot away in a 1-on-1 with the Penn State keeper.

Penn State took the lead in the 13th minute when Brittany Basinger headed in a Nickolette Driesse corner kick. Basinger notched the Nittany Lions seond goal in the 60th minute with another header off a Driesse corner.

Elizabeth Ball finished off the scoring in the 84th minute, scoring after a failed clearance in the box from a corner.

Maryland's backline played a solid game throughout, with senior Hope Gouterman and freshman Julia New making a number of blocks of potential Penn State chances. Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Egyed made eight saves including a pair of acrobatic reaction stops to keep Penn State off the board.

Harmon's chance came in the 80th minute. Freshman Jlon Flippens sent in an early long ball that Harmon was able to corral, only to see her close range blast bang off the right post.

Maryland returns to action Thursday night at Purdue. Action is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. and the match can be seen live on BTN Plus.
