Early Offense Leads Terps to Doubleheader Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

TEMPE, Az.- An early inning offensive outburst led the Maryland softball team (2-2) to a 13-9 win against San Diego in game two of a doubleheader split at the Kajikawa Classic on Saturday. The Terrapins led most of the way against No. 6 Oregon but eventually fell by a score of 7-2.

Lindsey Schmeiser hit two home runs for five RBI's against San Diego. The Dunkirk, Md. native is now just one home run away from tying Shannon Bustillos for the career leader in home runs at Maryland.

Game One

Maryland hung tough against No. 6 Oregon, but a seven run sixth inning rallied the Ducks from 2-0 down to defeat Maryland 7-2.

"We played five beautiful innings against Oregon," said head coach Julie Wright. "They have more depth and experience but we flat out competed. The program took a big step forward with that loss."

A two run, three hit second inning put the Terrapins ahead 2-0 in the second inning.  Following a Hannah Dewey walk and Kristina Dillard single, Skylynne Ellazar continued her breakout weekend with a RBI double to the right field fence to score Dewey. On the next pitch, Madison Martin found grass in left field to score Dillard.

The Terrapins maintained the 2-0 lead on the back of a gutty pitching performance by Brenna Nation. Nation held one of the best lineups in America scoreless for five innings. Highlight plays from the left side of the infield helped Maryland keep the 2-0 advantage.

Oregon scored seven runs off six hits and two Maryland errors to take a 7-2 lead in the sixth. The Ducks then retired the Terrapins in order in the seventh to preserve the win.

Game Two

An eight run first inning and three combined long balls by Lindsey Schmeiser and Hannah Dewey led Maryland to a 13-9 win over San Diego.

"Our offense stayed with it against San Diego and kept landing good punches," said Wright. "I was very happy for Lindsey and her performance on both sides of the ball. Brenna came in and finished things up. She pitched great today."

The Maryland offense started early in this one, as the bats broke out in the first inning for eight runs off six hits. After Sarah Calta reached on an error, Corey Schwartz, Hannah Dewey, Kristina Dillard, Madison Martin, and Destiney Henderson all reached base, scoring five runs. With the Terrapins already up 5-0, Lindsey Schmeiser blasted her first home run of the afternoon to left-center field to expand the lead to eight.

San Diego would respond in the third inning as the Torreros scored seven runs of their own. Four straight hits, seven total in the inning including a three run home run of their own resulted in an 8-7 ballgame through two and a half innings.

Eight runs weren't all the Terrapins had in them however. Maryland responded to the San Diego charge immediately, scoring five in the bottom half. With two outs, Henderson doubled to left prompting Lindsey Schmeiser to hit her second home run of the game, to the same spot as the first. Sarah Calta and Corey Schwartz got on for Hannah Dewey who hit her first long ball of the year to straight away center. Schmeiser and Dewey's home runs pushed the Maryland lead to 13-7.

Brenna Nation relieved Hannah Dewey in the circle in the third and went the rest of the way. Pitching in her second game of the afternoon, Nation did her job, going 4.1 innings, allowing two runs while striking out two.

Maryland will wrap up its stay in Arizona with a single game against Utah State tomorrow at 11:00 a.m (EST)
