COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The No. 6 Maryland men's lacrosse team posted its fourth double-digit scoring effort of the season en route to defeating No. 10 Albany, 10-7, Wednesday evening.
Four different players finished with two goals for Maryland, which included three-point performances from both junior Matt Rambo and senior Bryan Cole. The Terps improve to 4-2 on the year with their third straight victory, while Albany drops to 3-2 with the loss.
After carrying a 7-3 advantage into the break, the Great Danes pushed the Terps in the closing minutes of the third quarter to cut the deficit to one. Goals from senior John Maloney and redshirt junior Seth Oakes brought the lead to two before an extra-man score from redshirt senior Derrick Eccles with 50 seconds to go in the quarter had the visitors within one.
Maryland quickly regained momentum in the fourth, getting a goal from sophomore Connor Kelly on a Cole feed at 14:08. Junior Colin Heacock capitalized on a man-up opportunity at 11:01, burying a Rambo dish from the right wing to put the Terps ahead 9-6. Senior goalie Kyle Bernlohr was tested throughout the half, making six second half stops.
The hosts took care of business down the stretch, getting its final goal from Rambo with 5:21 left to play. Albany managed one more goal, but the Terrapin defense locked things down late to secure the three-point victory.
Maryland jumped out to a 4-2 lead after the first quarter, before Cole and redshirt sophomore Tim Rotanz netted their second of the day in the second quarter. Heacock also finished with two scores overall as Maryland outshot the Great Danes 42-23.
Freshman faceoff man Austin Henningsen was dominant on the restart, winning 16-20 on the evening.
The Terps will return to action next Saturday, March 26, when the squad hosts former ACC foe North Carolina at Maryland Stadium. Faceoff is slated for 2:00 pm on ESPNU.
