Box Score WASHINGTON, DC- Corey Schwartz had an incredible outing, reaching base in all four at bats with three hits including a triple, as Maryland fell in a close one to Georgetown 5-4. The Terrapins totaled ten hits to the Hoyas five, but walks and untimely errors proved costly.
The hometown team struck first, scoring three runs on three walks, one hit, and one error in the first inning. The first three Hoya batters would draw walks and made them count as a passed ball scored two runs. A two out double scored the third run of the frame.
Maryland would constantly threaten throughout the game, notching at least one hit in every inning except the first. The Terps picked up one run a piece in the fourth and fifth to cut the deficit to one.
In the fourth, Hannah Dewey led off the inning with a hard liner before Kristina Dillard sacrificed her over. Corey Schwartz and Sarah Lang then walked to load the bases. Emily Libero promptly hit a sacrifice fly to center field to put a run on the board.
A Skylynnne Ellazar single and a Kylie Daitl double (both 2-4 on the day) followed by a Hannah Dewey sacrifice fly put the second Maryland run on the board in the fifth.
Madison Martin came in relief of Brenna Nation in the first inning and threw 4.2 innings, allowing one earned run.
Martin's lone blemish came in the bottom of the fifth when a two run home run boosted the Hoya lead back up to three, 5-2.
The Terrapins threatened in the sixth putting two on with no outs. Destiney Henderson lined one to the left center field gap but an amazing grab by the Hoya outfielder kept two Maryland runs from reaching home.
Four more hits, including a Corey Schwartz RBI single in the seventh put up two runs to pull Maryland within one but the Terps couldn't push the tying run home and fell 5-4.
The District Invite continues tomorrow with a doubleheader against Monmouth at 11:00 a.m. and George Washington at 1:30 p.m. These games will take place at the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex at George Washington University.
