Box Score WASHINGTON, DC- A furious two out rally in the bottom of the seventh led Maryland to a dramatic 5-4 win over Columbia on Sunday.
Facing a 4-3 deficit, the first two batters in the Maryland seventh flew out to the outfield. Down to their last out, Corey Schwartz placed a single, her third of the outing, to start the two-out rally. Hannah Dewey promptly followed with a five-pitch walk to shift the tying run to second base and put the winning run on. With a 0-2 count, Kristina Dillard hit a single to right to tie the game and a Columbia throwing error scored Dewey to complete the comeback and give Maryland a 5-4 win.
Timely hitting was the key for the Terrapins in this one as four of the five Maryland runs were scored with two outs. Corey Schwartz and Kristina Dillard went a combined 5-7 with four RBIs. The captain duo both knocked RBI doubles in the first inning to give Maryland a 2-0 lead.
Maryland added one more in the second inning with another clutch two-out hit, this time by Kylie Datil. Datil scored Destiney Henderson who worked her way around the base path with a walk and stolen base.
Freshman Sami Main got her first start of her Maryland career. Main kept Columbia off the board in four of the five innings she pitched. However, in the third the Lions used four straight one-out hits to tie the game up at three. The Lions used a leadoff solo homer in the top of the sixth to take a 4-3 lead.
"I was very pleased with Sami Main's first collegiate start," said head coach Julie Wright. "She kept it close and allowed us the opportunity to win it at the end."
Hannah Dewey relieved Main in the circle and earned the win by way of the seventh inning comeback. The junior hurled two scoreless innings and recorded two strikeouts.
On the weekend, Corey Schwartz starred from the plate, going 9-14 with a .929 slugging percentage. The Toms River, NJ. native cracked two doubles in Sunday's game and a triple against Georgetown.
