Terps Take NYC for Spring Opener

NEW YORK - The Maryland men's soccer team hit the Big Apple for a weekend of soccer and sightseeing last Saturday and Sunday.

The Terps kicked off the spring season with a 2-2 draw against New York Red Bull II on Sunday morning with goals from sophomores Jorge Calix and Eryk Williamson.

But the fun started Saturday when the team had the opportunity to explore New York City.

After taking a bus to Hoboken, New Jersey, the team took the subway into the city where they visited the World Trade Center before heading to Times Square for lunch at Lure Fish Bar.

The team headed back to the World Trade Center to visit the 9/11 Memorial where they spoke to Maryland alum Ed Stein. Stein was late to work at the World Trade Center the day of the 9/11 attacks and his story added perspective to the team's visit.

The squad woke up early Sunday to face NYRB II and former Terrapin Dan Metzger before heading to the Red Bulls' home opener against Toronto FC, where the team got to watch the debut of their former teammate Tsubasa Endoh.

Maryland travels to Ohio for a matchup with the Columbus Crew on Friday, March 25 its next time out.
