COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Incoming freshmen Gia Milana and Katie Myers were named to Volleyball Magazine's Fab 50, the publication announced in its latest issue.
Volleyball Magazine created the Fab 50 list in 1990 to recognize the top incoming collegiate freshmen.
“We are excited that our program is attracting some of the top prospects in the country,” head coach Steve Aird said. “Gia and Katie are exceptional young players who love the sport and play the game the right way. They are great additions to the strong foundation our players have built. There is a great energy around the program right now and we feel it is the start of something very special here in College Park.”
The first-ever Under Armour First Team All-American in program history, Milana was ranked the No. 15 recruit in her class by PrepVolleyball.com. The 2015 Michigan Gatorade Player of the Year and Miss Volleyball Michigan, Milana participated in U.S. National Team tryouts last month. An outside hitter from Romeo, Mich., Milana enrolled at Maryland in January.
A 2015 Under Armour Third Team All-American, Myers holds 22 records at Westerville Central High School and was also honored as a PrepVolleyball.com Club All-American. A middle blocker/opposite hitter from Westerville, Ohio, Myers averaged 5.66 kills per set last season.
Seventeen athletes on the 2016 Fab 50 will compete in the Big Ten next season. Minnesota leads the way with three incoming freshmen on the list, while defending national champion Nebraska, Michigan, Wisconsin and Illinois also have two representatives. Penn State, Ohio State, Purdue and Indiana each have one player on the Fab 50.
This is the first time in program history that multiple Terps have been placed on the prestigious list. Before Milana and Myers made the list, Maryland's only recipient was Katie Cramer, who earned the honor 19 years ago in 1997.
