ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Bryan Cole's goal with 49 seconds remaining lifted the No. 5 Maryland men's lacrosse team to an 8-7 victory over Michigan Saturday in snowy conditions at Michigan Stadium. The Terps move to 1-0 in Big Ten Conference action with their sixth consecutive win.
With the game tied, 7-7, and under two minutes to play, senior goalkeeper Kyle Bernlohr made a pair of spectacular saves. The second save led to a transition opportunity for the Terrapins that finished with Cole's game-winner.
Bernlohr matched his career-high with 12 saves, including five in the fourth quarter, while Tim Muller chipped in on the defensive end with three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. Cole led the way offensively with two goals and two assists, in addition to Matt Rambo's two goals.
The Terrapins opened the scoring in the first quarter when Cole fed Rambo down low to beat the Michigan goalkeeper. It was Rambo's 21st consecutive game with a goal – the fifth longest streak in the nation.
Michigan then answered with three consecutive goals to close the first quarter, before Dylan Maltz and Henry West each found the back of the net to tie the game in the second. West's goal started with a key turnover caused by Muller.
Trailing, 4-3, at the halftime break, the Terps emerged from the tunnel with vigor. Cole, Rambo and Colin Heacock each scored a goal less than five minutes into the frame to give Maryland a 6-4 advantage. Heacock's goal marked his team-leading 20th of the season – a career-high for the junior.
The Wolverines were relentless, however, scoring back-to-back goals to tie the game with 10:58 to play in the game.
Maryland regained its lead on an EMO opportunity when Greg Danseglio led a transition break and fed freshman Louis Dubick. The rookie then hit Isaiah Davis-Allen, who scored to put the Terps up, 7-6. Michigan tied the game up one more time, but Cole's game-winner was the difference.
Freshman Curtis Corley came up huge for the Terrapins, winning 4-of-5 faceoffs in the second half to buoy the visitors.
The Terps return to action Sunday, April 10, as they take on Penn State in Happy Valley on Big Ten Network.
