“Cornell came out and played hard,” head coach Cathy Reese said. “They came out firing and with a lot of effort. Coming out tonight after a huge win on Thursday, we didn't have a lot of rest or practice. I think we got off to a little bit of a slow start.”

Senior midfielder Taylor Cummings, junior attacker Caroline Wannen and sophomore attacker Megan Whittle each scored three goals. Wannen added four assists while Cummings made three assists and Whittle finished with one.

Freshman midfielder Caroline Steele, sophomore midfielder Kacie Longo and freshman attacker Kelsey Cummings each scored twice. Senior midfielder Bryn Boucher and junior midfielder Zoe Stukenberg each scored once.

Defensively, junior Morgan Torggler caused four turnovers and picked up two ground balls while freshman Steff Holmes and Taylor Cummings each caused three turnovers. Cummings finished with nine draw controls and three ground balls.

Cornell started the scoring before the Terps rattled off seven straight goals. Whittle and Cummings scored within 30 seconds before Boucher and Cummings recorded free-position goals to push Maryland ahead 4-1 at 25:56. Stukenberg added a goal before Wannen scored twice.

The Terps and Big Red traded goals, including a Taylor Cummings to Kelsey Cummings tally at 9:46. Steele scored with 1:10 remaining to give Maryland a 12-6 lead at halftime.

Whittle, Wannen and Steele gave the Terps a 15-6 lead to start the second half. Cornell scored two straight before Whittle and Cummings added goals within 36 seconds of each other. The Big Red tallied the final goal of the game at 1:12 but Maryland took the 17-9 win and handed Cornell its first loss of the season.

Whittle scored her 100th career goal in the game and is averaging 3.16 goals per game through 32 career games.

The Terps held a 22-15 advantage in ground balls and a 17-11 advantage in draw controls.

Freshman goalie Megan Taylor made three saves in net.
