COLLEGE PARK, Md.Junior forward Chelsea Jackson opened the scoring with her second goal in as many games, but the Maryland women's soccer team was forced to settle for a 1-1 draw with Gardner-Webb at Ludwig Field Saturday afternoon.

The Terrapins (0-1-1) and Runnin Bulldogs played an even match on a soggy Ludwig Field surface. Maryland had the better chances of the first half, but after an hour halftime lightning delay, Gardner-Webb had the better of the play in the second 45 minutes.

“I think they did well,” Maryland head coach Ray Leone said. “[The delays] didn't affect the game as much as it could have because both teams were ready. I think we have given a good account of ourselves in the first two games and I'm really proud of them.”

Maryland did most of the attacking in the first half. Jackson notched the first shot of the game in the third minute, a decent effort that was blocked away by Keeley Brown. Sophomore Jlon Flippens then came close in the seventh minute, but her strong header was cleared off the line by a Bulldog defender.

Sophomore Jarena Harmon put a shot on target in the 11th minute, but Brown was once again up to the task. The Terps continued to apply pressure as Harmon combined with Jackson to create a chance in the 27th minute. Harmon played a square ball to the feet of Jackson, who fired a hard right-footed shot that was saved.

Jackson's persistence was rewarded in the 40th minute. A long ball from the back found a streak Kady Badham in the right channel. The sophomore made a driving run before crossing the ball to Jackson, who tapped the ball past Brown. The assist was the first of Badham's career.

The Terps had solid success in the beginning of the second half. Harmon latched onto a Madison Turner ball in the 53rd minute, but had her shot saved. Turner was then the shooter in the 60th minute. The junior fizzed a shot that missed just wide.

Gardner-Webb tied the match with 16 minute left when Jessica Ferguson tapped a blocked initial shot past Terp keeper Rachel Egyed.

Maryland had the best chance of overtime. Harmon corralled the ball 25 yards away from goal and beat her defender before being unable to finish the 1-on-1 opportunity with the keeper.

The Terrapins return to action Thursday at William & Mary. Action is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
