COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Maryland football head coach DJ Durkin has named senior Perry Hills as the starting quarterback for the Terps heading into the 2016 season. Maryland begins its season at home on September 3 against Howard.
Hills started eight games for the Terps in 2015, passing for 1,001 yards and eight touchdowns. He also rushed for 535 yards, the fourth-most by a Maryland quarterback in a single season. Hills set the Maryland single-game quarterback record by rushing for 170 yards at Ohio State last season.
Hills has played in 18 career games with 15 starts at quarterback for the Terps. He's thrown for 2,423 yards with 17 touchdowns and has rushed for 536 yards with six touchdowns.
“After an open competition through the spring and the first two-plus weeks of training camp, we're excited to move forward with Perry as our starting quarterback,” said Durkin. “Perry has embraced this challenge from day one and has put in the work and shown improvement every day. He's grasped our offense and the way we want to do things, and has shown tremendous leadership.”
The game against the Bison is set to kickoff at noon at Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium and can be seen live on Big Ten Network.
Additionally, Durkin also announced that quarterback Caleb Henderson has transferred to Maryland from the University of North Carolina. The Burke, Virginia native was a standout at Lake Braddock High School where his father, Eric Henderson, was the offensive coordinator before accepting the head coaching job at Hayfield High School in Alexandria, Virginia. Henderson will sit out the 2016 season per NCAA transfer rules and will have two years of eligibility remaining starting in 2017.
