Throughout the season, UMTerps.com will introduce the Maryland community to each of its new players. The “Better Know a Terp” series continues with Julia New.
Season Report: New has been a mainstay in the Maryland lineup for the past three matches, starting each at outside back. She played 90 minutes in Maryland's 3-1 win over Illinois.
Before Maryland: New starred at The First Academy in Orlando, helping the Royals win six straight district titles. She was the FHSAA Class 1A District 4 Player of the Year her final two seasons.

umterps.com: When did you start playing soccer?
Julia New: When I was four.
umterps.com: How did you get into it?
Julia New: My dad used to play. He played outside back for UMass. He's was always my biggest role model for playing and my mom kept me motivated the whole time.
umterps.com: Who is your favorite soccer player?
Julia New: I like Messi. He's just so unselfish and I love it.
umterps.com: What other sports did you play as a kid besides soccer?
Julia New: I used to play basketball, but I didn't have good hand/eye coordination. I used to also ride horses, but it became a choice between that and soccer and I chose soccer all the way.
umterps.com: What has been the highlight of your soccer career?
Julia New: I don't have a specific highlight. It's just about what I can provide for my team. If I can do anything that's asked of me and deliver, that's what gives me the feeling that I've succeeded.
umterps.com: What's been your favorite part about coming to College Park?
Julia New: I think it was the way the whole team handled being new. We realized our differences and came together into a unit.
umterps.com: What is your favorite part of College Park non-sports related?
Julia New: I love the feel of the campus. I love the brick and the marble and the while pillars. It just feels like home.
umterps.com: What is your favorite place to eat in College Park?
Julia New: Bagel Place.
umterps.com: What do you miss most from home?
Julia New: Probably my dog. Her name is Jasmine. She's the cutest thing.

Julia New: Attack from the back.
Catch Julia and the Maryland women's soccer team at their next home match Thursday, October 6 against Ohio State at Ludwig Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. The game is Maryland's “Pink Game” with the first 100 fans in attendance getting a t-shirt. A silent auction will be held to benefit Breast Cancer research.
