EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Maryland women's soccer team scored with 14 seconds left in regulation to tie the match, but ultimately fell, 3-2, in double overtime at DeMartin Soccer Stadium Thursday night.
The Terrapins (3-8-1, 1-3-0) took the lead going into halftime on a Chelsea Jackson goal before falling behind late in the second half. Jackson tied the game in the final minute, but Hannah Jones finished off her hat trick with a tally in the 108th minute to give Michigan State the victory.
Maryland had a solid opening 15 minutes with sophomore Cassie Phillips, making her return to her home state, and redshirt freshman Darby Moore both getting shots off that were saved.
Jackson opened the scoring in the 40th minute. Freshman Jlon Flippens headed a ball to the top of the six that Jackson headed just over the line. The goal was Jackson's seventh of the season and Flippens notched her team-leading fourth assist of the year.
In the second half, Phillips just missed on an effort from 30 yards away that was palmed off the crossbar by Savannah Wotjtanowski. Michigan State then had its best stretch of the match with Jones scoring twice in a 20 minute span to give the home side the lead.
Maryland pushed for an equalizer and found one in the final minute of regulation. Junior Madison Turner sent in a ball that was corralled by sophomore Jarena Harmon on the right side. Harmon fired a shot that was saved by Wotjtanowski, but Jackson headed in the deflection at the back post to tie the match.
The Terps had a number of chances in the overtime periods, including Harmon scuffing a shot on a 1-on-1 with the goalkeeper. However, Jones took her chance in the 108th minute and ended the contest.
Maryland returns to action Sunday at Michigan. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
